The Oregon Trail

I have always wanted to go on the Oregon Trail. In reality, I think every kid my generation has always wanted to go on the Trail– the game inspired us all. And so, when I was informed not too long ago that we would be going on a class field trip on the Oregon Trail, I enthusiastically shouted out “Westward Ho!” Inside my head, of course.

Yesterday, three classes of 4th and 5th graders embarked on a brave and adventurous trip to Oregon (We did make it to NH). Two most fabulous wagonmasters led us and two covered wagons– complete with oxen– on a wonderful walk over fields and “across the prairie.” The kids were in costume, and earned points for authenticity. They also had to push the wagon up steep hills, water the animals, and make important barters. Much cornbread and beef jerky was swapped, as well as rope, chalk, and even water. We “nooned” at Independence Rock, where lucky chalk owners signed their name on the boulder.

Although not every child enjoyed it (as can always be expected), I think this is probably one of the best field trips I’ve ever attended. The kids and I had equal delight imagining what the real journey might have been like and enjoying the perils of the Oregon Trail.

Things I love about spring:

Water, water, everywhere.

Melting snow.

Knee high rubber boots and sloppy walks in the woods.

Homemade maple syrup.

Daffodils, and early tulips poking up through dead leaves.

Those first warm days.

Open windows.

Wild, untamed forsythia bushes.

Migrating birds.

Peepers.

Wildlife. Last week I saw a moose.

Spring Fever!
